You’ll Always Make Time For Things That Matter. Every Time.

When I was younger I would get really annoyed at the idea that people couldn’t ever find time for me.

It was clear that if they wanted to make time for me they could have. I now recognize I wasn’t a priority, nor did I make many compelling cases for myself. I still find it strange the avoidance driven language that goes into making plans.

While choosing to not hang out with me is fine, I see people, myself included, take the same approach towards their goals.

If I want to be taken more seriously in music, I need to spend more time making music.

Moving forward I’m going to take a chunk of the week and dedicate it towards music recording.

Something else will take a hit but I’ll be moving forward on those goals again.

You are the person who controls your schedule

We all have commitments that we’re stuck with each week.

For me this includes the time I spend making money, the podcasting and daily writing and whatever other activities I agree to. This week it includes a literal indie wrestling show. When I’m on point with my planning, I take into account the special activities and rearrange my life to accomplish each task in a week.

The things we end up doing each week are the things that matter to us.

It’s worth taking a look at your calendar, the one you control and mapping out how you actually spend your time.

If, like me, you see you’re choosing to neglect certain things, it’s on you to find a way to add them back to your schedule.

It is hard to sacrifice things you love for other things you love

I’ve barely played video games this year.

The way things have panned out I’ve had to work real hard to make some money. I still do. The choice was Cyberpunk 2077 or the Puerto Rico trip. There wasn’t time to do both. There still isn’t time for regular video games and music.

I’m even questioning if I want to keep writing literally every single day. Maybe I’d benefit more from a weekly release schedule. Before committing to that big of a change I’ll be performing a time analysis to make sure I’m working on the things I want to be working on.

If I can add music and still write daily and maybe even play some video games, I’m all for it.

The more packed your schedule is the more discipline you need

This year my biggest planning failure was overscheduling what I would get done.

Everything was planned so meticulously for a while, but without a real sense of how my body would react to my planning. I greatly underestimated how much sleep I’d need and this led to many days where I’d wake up later than expected. Or sometimes I’d leave a social event late and it would throw me off.

This was a failure to plan correctly, ignoring the realities of life.

You need to create some buffers in your calendar for real life, but also have the discipline to focus on your tasks when the time comes. You can’t be lazy and expect greatness.

Anyway I feel all over the place and writing this kind of content helps focus me on what I need to do next.
