Today I was minding my own business when the homie asked me what I was doing from 4-7 PM.
Turns out he had cruise tickets and wanted to know if I would join him. I had no expectations for it, but I don’t often go on cocktail cruises so I decided to go for it. Next thing I knew we were following the men in suits towards our destination, this AML boat.
This is the same AML cruise folk that hosted our VIP Tadoussac whale watching experience.
Either way I was supposed to go undercover as a financial security advisor in training. I didn’t try that hard to be undercover but also it turns out that this wasn’t the most social group of people… to a newcomer.
This cruise was the reward for attending a finance conference
Over time I have dabbled with becoming a financial advisor.
Done correctly there is much money involved. Done correctly also means over a significant period of time as you find high value clients you like. Either way, other finance companies that offer products financial advisors can hustle, offer things like cruises to make the advisors feel cool.
This is actually how a lot of things work. We once did a covid whiskey tasting with a software company, free of charge, just to get to know us better.
Either way I did not attend the conference, which made the experience extra sweet, although after I write this I have a solid 3 hours of work to do.
Worth it.
A quick commentary on the local Montreal cruise routes view
I rapped on a boat in Toronto and the view was phenomenal.
I was hoping for some wonderful downtown shots of Montreal. Some beautiful skyline views. Only that was ignorance. I did not actually think about Montreal’s geography and where a boat cruise would go.
It was also the first time I used the Old Port for any port related purposes.
Anyway the boat basically went from the main dock area all the way to Davidson street, then we turned around and came home. We were blessed with the industrious view of shipping crates on one side and the boring south shore forests on the other.
It’s not really AML’s fault, it’s just the reality of where the cruise can cruise. There certainly isn’t enough space between Montreal and Laval. Anyway, super boring outside of right by the Jacques Cartier Bridge.
Still a fun time.
I met a man in finance, 6’2, maybe a trust fund, some colour eyes
After we get on the boat this guy is asking how people liked the presentation.
My dude starts bluffing like my guy couldn’t make it today, etc. I was like, well, may as well talk to the guy. We get into a conversation about music services and all the money out there.
Then we all headed outside and the guy walked off to shmooze. I had no idea he was some bigtime portfolio manager who makes big time financial deals. Meanwhile I’m there in my odd suit talking about rapping on a boat like this in Toronto. This man had no idea what’s up. But who knows, maybe he sees me again and remembers me.
Hopefully I remember him.
Anyway, I had a few glasses of wine, enough hors d'oeuvres to not need supper and did something out of my usual.
Break your norms folk and count your blessings.
