Success Tip: Learn to See Past The Emotion of a Moment Before Reacting

Life is a whirlwind.

One day you are sitting there planning a beat battle and then 2 days out it gets cancelled.

At first a flood of emotion hits. The fear of embarrassment and disappointment taking the forefront. Any focus I had for the board meeting I was sitting at disappeared.

I built up these scenarios in my mind.

My heart was racing.

I was prepared for the worst.

To be clear, all of that was in my head and reality was much kinder than my imagination.

Be willing to give people the benefit of the doubt

When I told the folk what happened everyone was understanding.

Immediately the conversation shifted to when we could make this happen for realsies.

We need a new venue. Giving ourselves some time to market the event properly will also help. The preliminary economics of the situation show we can cover a 500$ prize pool no problem.

Just off ticket sales.

There are a number of people invested in this event that are willing to work with me to help bring the next iteration to life.

In my head I was prepared for the worst, in reality everyone was a mature adult about the situation.

It got me thinking how many things I’ve messed up over emotional responses

When you are candid from the start people are actually understanding

When I was younger, moments like this would compel me to lie.

Instead of facing the reality of the situation, I would come up with elaborate tales of why things didn’t come to pass as expected.

In those days the failures were the result of my negligence. I needed to lie not because I had made mistakes, but because I had ignored my responsibility. In those days I was never trusted with this kind of responsibility.

The scenario I built up in my head is a manifestation of emotion from a time when my life was not good.

Still, even in those days, had I just been honest and explained what I was dealing with, people would have respected me more.

When the poop hits the wind blowing machine, there are more people there to help you get better when you are transparent.

When your heart is racing and your hormones are flooding your judgement, take a second to breathe.

You may be like me and it may be some big mammal fecal matter that you built up in your head.

Breathe, be honest and trust that whatever comes will come and not be as bad as you think

The law of attraction is a powerful mechanism that governs our life.

If you set it up in your mind that everything is going to go bad, you will behave in a way that increases the likelihood of bad happening.

When you approach things with the right attitude, people feel that energy. In response they give you the same benefit of the doubt that you offered them. However if you move in a shifty way based on distrust, they may not trust you back.

Today was a good lesson in trusting the universe.

No, the event is not going to happen as planned. But now there’s a few of us inspired to make it better than it would have been. The beauty in counting blessings in your life is they appear when you look for them.

While I had an uncomfortable hour or two, the end result was a much higher sense of trust in the world.
