Presentation Matters: My Journey With Style

Somewhere along the way I realized that really successful music artists tend to dress well.

Even when their brand is something seemingly humble like skater fashion, it’s all name brand and new. It’s rare artists will wear the same outfit too many times too close together and part of the brand is dressing fresh. This can still be based on comfort, but my point is the people I’m emulating are all dressed well, within their own style guidelines.

Many of us cannot afford designer clothing and I believe this creates a disconnect as people confuse being fashionable with being stylish.

Even the anti-style people have a uniform with its own set of rules to follow.

Let’s start this off by saying fashion and style are not the same thing.

Fashion is the collection of popular styles

Fashion is about popularity.

The definition of fashionable (Google stealing from Oxford) is:Characteristic of, influenced by, or representing a current popular trend or style.

I understand that a lot of people don’t like fashion. In a lot of ways being fashionable is just jacking what other stylish people did. However if you understand fashion and style, you can still create proper distinction within that world.

There’s a difference between dressing off the rack and understanding the art of modern fashion and creating outfits that make sense.

To accomplish this goal, you need to be in touch with style.

Style is more about adhering to a particular code, whatever it may be

The more specific definition we care about is the second one I jacked from Google who stole it from Oxford:

a distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed.

Style is about coming up with something distinct enough that it can be described as different. Usually there is some kind of ruleset that style follows, and stylish people can apply those rules to a wide array of outfit choices. For the sake of clarity, style is the knowledge of how to create looks.

This differs from fashion, because fashion is about trendiness. You can be fashionable with no style and you can have all kinds of style with 0 care for fashion.

Following some fashion trends is a good way to learn style.

In order to create a style, you must learn about styles

Once I realized that my fans care what shoes I wear and how they match my outfit, I started paying more attention.

I became more cognizant of the different choices people make with regards to style and fashion. You start seeing who dresses for comfort and who wants to “look good”. Within both groups are people who match really well and people who just wear anything. It’s a whole spectrum of caring out there.

I will say it feels like people in Montreal try hard to be stylish while not necessarily caring about fashion. People will be dressing up to go do regular stuff. Not always, but I don’t want to be caught on St. Laurent at night looking bummy.

The more I see what I like in other people’s choices the easier it gets to start picking clothing for outfits.

I now buy clothing, with other clothing in mind. Or I find something knowing it’s the foundation of some fit I have yet to discover. It’s truly more fun and artistic than I ever expected.

Even if it’s all kind of vain in the end.

Live Long and Prosper Everyone

P.S. My boy went out to Uber and ended up meeting Spike Lee. You really never know what may happen when you leave the crib.
