We felt foolish waiting at the red lights as everyone else tore through them at 2 in the morning.
I landed around midnight and picked up the car. About an hour and a half later Littyyy Bro Flacko & Poison Pen landed and I scooped them from arrivals. Little did I expect to do some Uber Driver stuff like airport pickups in Puerto Rico, but it was 1 AM and interesting to see how other airports manage it.
Once we went into the world we learned the GPS is in KM/HR as distances are measured in metric but the speeds are posted in MPH, you can also turn right on red.
Apparently you don’t even need to wait for the red to turn green, if it’s the middle of the night, people respected traffic in the daylight. Though we waited for the light to change as none of us wanted the blue and green police lights showing up in the rearview.
Even if following the law brands us as tourists.
This Airbnb is stunning and worth every dollar
After finding convenient parking on one of the side streets near the Airbnb we walked towards it only to see a police car with its lights on.
It stopped right next to us as we unlocked the door, but proceeded to inspect a car as we walked in, we deadass expected some harassment, but nothing. After heading up some stairs and waking up everyone, making a mistake on which door was ours, we entered a super spacious and stunning common area. Full of stylish and interesting antique feeling furniture.
There are easily 10 places you can get cool and unique looking shots for Instagram, these Airbnb people know what’s up.
There’s also a private rooftop where we can go smoke, with a beautiful view of both the ocean and old San Juan.
This was definitely the most expensive place I’ve stayed, but it’s also incredibly beautiful and worth every dollar.
Chilling in a gorgeous setting is a vibe, I’m writing this while looking up at the Atlantic, it’s amazing.
El Morro is a cool connection to the past
If you look at the Puerto Rican license plates, you’ll see a structure in the middle.
This is a tower that is located in the corner of a formerly active fort involved in plenty of battles between 1600 and 1900. I love visiting forts, they are a crazy combination of architecture and military history. It’s also right next to the Atlantic Ocean, making the view absolutely bananas.
It’s enthralling for me to walk the same steps where important history like the Spanish-American war played out.
There’s also a gorgeous cemetery we didn’t get to visit as it was already closed but it looks like it’s worth heading back to before we leave.
Walking through the streets of Old San Juan, you’re left with a sense of deep history. I live in a young country, so there’s very little that actually compares. It’s humbling to witness culture in its purest forms.
Glad we got some touristy stuff done.
We hit Wal Mart and the liquor store in anticipation of the night
I’m writing the second half of this before the day is done because I won’t be sober enough to finish this later.
We drove across San Juan towards the Wal Mart which was a solid 16 KM away. While we experienced some traffic at rush hour, it’s a blessing because we got to see the city (from the highway). My favourite part was the multiple billboard ads for strip clubs.
We also discovered the car is Tesla styled self driving, which made me feel like an idiot for actually driving myself.
The Wal Mart Supercenter is huge, and for whatever reason the razer I wanted to buy required a sales attendant to unlock… Do people really steal razers like that?
After that I had to circle the block a few times while Flacko got liquor as there was no way I was going to part, there was even police there monitoring the area. It was nice though because I got to bump it in Puerto Rico in a fancier car than I own.
Now I’m back on the roof as Pen and Flacko talk, sipping a rum & Coke enjoying life.
There’s a club across the street from our Airbnb
We are in a popping part of town.
As the sun started going down and people were prepping to go out, the nighttime outfits started appearing. There are a good amount of nighttime establishments within walking distance and we are going to get some kind of lit tonight. It’s pretty exciting.
Today was a very nice day. It’s not often I get to just stop, slow down and smell the flowers.
Plus I got some fire fried chicken while fending off the most aggressive pigeons ever. Mostly because some tourist kid kept feeding them, while whining about them, before feeding them again. Don’t feed the pigeons.
Looking forward to updating you more as we live out this trip.
Live Long and Prosper Everyone
P.S. As we sit on the penthouse rooftop lounge we all have portable batteries connected to our phones… welcome to 2024.
