Today my brain was flying as I tried to puzzle over what label best defines what we do out here in Montreal.
When we think about our culture, the way our people live, how would we define it? This label needs to be broad enough that a couple of million people understand it, but specific enough that it isn’t something other places can claim. This is obviously a lot bigger than myself, so starting with my life can create an example for what I’m looking for more broadly.
Basically I’m trying to identify symbols for flags we can wave.
Something that isn’t simply derivative of what other cultures do, as much as that’s possible.
When tapping into the new, one must start with oneself.
I’ve never felt connected to a singular tribe, I’m all over the place based upon the moment & need
My life has always been small pockets of people from different tribes congregating at crossroad intervals.
I struggle to attach myself to any existing group of people. I’m out there, and I participate in different activities, but for whatever reason group efforts are circumstantial in my life. My chosen tribe members are scattered and lack real cohesion.
Musically, I’m all over the place. I like a lot of things and I am comfortable writing over sounds I don’t even necessarily like for the challenge of it. JS was like, bro you make chameleon music.
I thought about how my life moves, me going to new places and doing new things, trying to blend in and see what the natural order of things are.
Maybe my shit is chameleon like, maybe not exactly that word, but this is a foundation to build on.
The floaters of the world are people who need representation too
Socializing is a skill I’ve spent the better part of my adult life sharpening.
In my current iteration, when I vibe nice with people it’s like peanut butter & jelly. Otherwise my small talk game is less weird than it used to be. Doing Uber has been teaching me a lot about bullshit, nothing conversations.
Still the idea of floating between tribes trying to find people to relate to resonates with me. I’m sure it resonates with other people. I’m sure breaking free of that pressure to blend in everywhere and discovering a way to be yourself in all environments is a goal to achieve for many.
Arguably chameleons blend in, but they stay the same at all times.
Ain’t nothing wrong with swapping a uniform and code switching for the moment.
Sometimes you should ask for help to figure it out
Over the next while, fine folk like #JSNOREGARD are going to listen to me muse as I wax poetic on the philosophy of branding.
Other people see you in a much different light than you see yourself. I know what I resonate with and what I can represent. Maybe someone who sees the forest and not the trees has a better way to brand it all.
What’s important is you start to find themes and ideas that capture what makes you unique. I approach life with a bit of an open template on how things should go these days. I want to experience new things and be in new environments.
I want to also fit in where I am based on the behavioural codes.
This chameleon thing is a solid foundation to build off of.
Ask people who work with you how they’d describe you.
Live Long and Prosper Everyone
