Big Homie Wes – Como Se Llama – Track Review

Como Se Llama - Big Homie Wes - Cover

Big Homie Wes is a Vermont artist on his hustle. He writes and performs his own lyrics, makes his own beats and is a DJ. Today we will be looking at his song, Como Se Llama.

This track was released on Feb 18th, 2023 and is available on all the digital streaming platforms (DSPs). Big Homie Wes even made his way up to Montreal to perform the track over at Blue Dog.

Before we get into the song, let’s go over how we do it here.

What goes into a Behind That Suit review?

These reviews are intended more to identify the target audience of a song than focus on the critical elements. I’ll take a look at the following list today and let you know what I think of each part of the song:

  • Album Cover/Song Title

  • The beat/mixing

  • The lyrics

  • The flow & delivery

  • The song itself

A song is both the sum of its parts and the entire package at once. Everything from the promo content to the actual music is part of the experience.

Sometimes an artist will excel in one area but be weak in another. Sometimes each part of the song is trash but the song slaps so hard none of that matters. If you know anything about

BTS reviews, you know we go in depth.

Full disclosure this is the first written review I’ve done. Thanks to Big Homie Wes for working with me to make this happen.

Como Se Llama album cover and song title

From what Google translate tells me, Como Se Llama is Spanish for “What’s it called”. I feel like it could be a “what it do” or “what’s your name” but I’m not Spanish. Seeing a title in a different language always catches my attention.

You hear the song name and see the title before you hear the song in most cases. This title is vague not giving me a lot to know what the song is about. It did make me more curious.

The cover garnered for more interest than the title did. The green, white, and red scream Italy at me right away. Though technically it’s the Mexican flag colours as well. I love how the paint effect makes it look like the title is popping off in a 3D way.

In the grey, still paint-like, background of the cover you see some imagery. It’s almost like looking through a wet or dirty window. We see a ladder going to a scary place, a stained glass window, a house in the middle of nowhere and a car.

It gives the effect of a story being told. My imagination pictures this middle of nowhere story where Big Homie Wes lived a life unlike my Montreal reality.

I like the cover more than I like the title.

Como Se Llama beat and mixing

Welcome to the part of the review I enjoy the least. I don’t make beats, nor do I mix, so I feel unqualified to comment with much detail. Instead, you are getting the Holdiverse breakdown.

The beat low key makes me want to do a slow sturdy. There is a tense energy in the main melody being presented throughout the song. That melody remains fairly constant in this beat, it feels pretty on par with how a lot of the drumless samples are used today.

Speaking on the drums, I want them to pop more. The highs in this song over power the drums on my 40$ soundbar. I have no idea how this sounds on good speakers, this soundbar is where I listen to music.

I like the way they have this almost wood block tocky sound. If the bassier side of this track popped more it would slap super heavy. That being said, I like the composition. I have this song on loop as I write this and the groove that Big Homie Wes chose helps put your mind into a trance state.

My preferences would include a bit more changeups, but this beat works. They help bring the vocals to life. Since Wes made the beat, I got no problems saying this is one of those songs I could ignore the words and just ride the wave of the beat.

Como Se Llama Hook/Chorus

Big Homie Wes performing at Blue Dog

The chorus of the song has Big Homie Wes macking on a shawty. He wants a no drama lady, does not need someone to make him better, and he only wants her until mañana. It’s a simple chorus that relies heavy on this “ay” chant which is the real hook.

The hook works, you can almost picture the crowd singing along. This chorus sets the mood and the verses are there to tell you more a bout Big Homie Wes’ backstory. I picture him saying it to her in a club setting.

He keeps it clean and gives a lot of pauses. It’s 4 simple lines most people will be able to pick up before the song is finished playing.

Commo Sé llama lil Mama I don’t want you if you with the drama I don’t want you if you my karma I just want you till mañana

Como Se Llama Verses

The verses are straight forward, he is not relying on complex wordplay. Big Homie Wes says it as it is, and manages to drop a super clever one with:

No back up plan All I had was a hundred grand On my mind At all times

The way he wrote this gives him the ability to say “All I had was a hundred grand”. However, the next line implies it as a goal. This first verse focuses on his thirst for dollars, it does end with a line about a lady for the streets, elusively tying it back into the chorus.

The next verse also feels unrelated unless we’re talking to the lady. This time he’s older and grimier. There is a sense he has seen some violence.

Ready for pictures Tension get cut like some scissors Fuck you I din’t come in witcha Dust off the opps I might have to get ya

This verse ends talking about a girl, I like when he says so humanly, still never let her know that I need her.

In the third verse it feels like he is now caught up and breaking down he just wants to smash and dash. I do like this part:

I don’t care you’re almost 40 Don’t need to hear your story

Then it flows into some weed bars. Ends off with a, you can’t handle my life mantra. Straight forward and no surprises lyrics, if anything a bit generic, but good.

Como Se Llama Flow & Delivery

Big Homie Wes at Blue Dog

Big Homie Wes is clearly inspired by drill music on this song. For the most part his flow is in the pocket, and he rides the beat well. He has a good handle of speeding up and slowing down across the lines, all while avoiding syllable stuffing.

The only exception to that is when he goes, You would have never made it through, that one feels like a forced line. Still, that’s it. The rest of it fits nicely.

There isn’t anything over the top or tricky. The flow is constant across the verses. It does change, but it follows the same setup. This will boil down to preferences, my flow be all over so I prefer more changes.

What I am really impressed with is his delivery. While remaining in a single octave, Big Homie Wes plays the notes he hits to the fullest. He is extremely clear with his enunciation and is able to convey emotion into his voice.

While this song is effectively peacocking, the nonchalance he displays works to match the content of his verses. I’d argue the delivery is the best part of this song.

Como Se Llama overall song feeling

This song will work live. It has a singalong element and taps into modern trends. It made me want to get up and dance.

The song content doesn’t come off as innovative, but it feels like Wes is telling us who he is. He describes his grind respecting all statutes of limitations. It also tells people that Big Homie Wes is on the market, so ladies, when he performs this, give him that wink if you’re down.

The song has a bit of an algorithmic feel to it. This is both a positive and a negative. The positive is that if this came on, it would fit into a lot of vibes. The negative is, I may not remember it if I am out and about and this comes on.

It’s one of those songs a younger me would have written off entirely. Then 10 years later would find myself singing it and ignoring all the stuff I used to praise. It does it’s job and does it well instead of trying to impress you and failing… been there, done that.

Good job Big Homie Wes, good tune.

Who should bump this?

If drill/drumless beats and triplet flows are your thing, this is something to consider. If you are looking for a less explicit version to play around the “safer” people in your life, this is a real option.

This track is for people that want to ride the wave and relate via energy. The old school heads may want to skip this. It’s well made and makes me look forward to seeing what Big Homie Wes will do next.

If you liked this review and want to see me write about your song, hit me up and let’s figure it out.
